In 1999, focused on the environment and sustainable development, Cégep de Sorel-Tracy and the Pierre-de Saurel RCM founded the Centre de transfert technologique en écologie industrielle (CTTÉI). Certified three years later by the Ministère de l'Éducation du Loisir et du Sport du Québec as a college centre for technology transfer, the CTTÉI joined the Réseau Trans-tech, a province-wide network of CEGEP-based applied research centres. The centre’s mandate was recently renewed until June 30, 2015.
In 2001, the CTTÉI became part of the legacy of a man who helped build Sorel-Tracy and the province of Québec, Mr. Joseph-Édouard Simard.
In 2012, the CTTÉI will move into new offices and laboratories that better meet staff needs at 3025 Boulevard de Tracy, facing Collège de Sorel-Tracy.

The CTTÉI aims to enhance the performances of businesses and communities in Québec through research and development into innovative approaches and technologies in industrial ecology focused on waste reclamation, green products and new industrial synergies. The CTTÉI therefore seeks to play a leadership role in Québec by promoting industrial ecology, contributing to human resource training in the field and coordinating and leading industrial, inorganic and mixed waste reclamation initiatives.
The actions of the CTTÉI are driven by three strategic directions:
Direction 1. Position the CTTÉI in specific niches and areas of expertise:
- Waste reclamation (metallurgical, organic, electronic)
- Environmentally-friendly materials
- GHG
- Synergies
- Québec Industrial Waste Exchange (BRIQ)
- Green chemistry
- Waste sorting and management technologies
Direction 2. Ensure the outreach of the CTTÉI
Direction 3. Support and strive for excellence

The mandate of the college centres for technology transfer is as follows:
The college centres for technology transfer (CCTT) have a legal basis and are recognized by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport. The centres are managed by CEGEPs and aim to carry out applied research, provide technical assistance to businesses and disseminate information in a given field so as to contribute to the development and execution of technological innovation projects and the implementation and dissemination of new technologies.
