« Industrial Ecology: Business Opportunities »

On October 14-15, 2004, the Centre de transfert technologique en écologie industrielle (CTTÉI) and the Centre de recherche en environnement UQAM/Sorel-Tracy (CREUST) held the Second Industrial Ecology Conference under the theme Industrial Ecology: Business Opportunities.

Within the international context of the progressive implementation of national and corporate sustainable development strategies, industrial ecology constitutes a positive demonstration of the possibility of integrating multisectoral interests for a more structuring future economy.

Energy transfers, industrial by-product reuse in production cycles, industrial networks and clean production strategies are only a few examples of the activities that have already been implemented in certain countries by private and public organizations. The conference therefore focussed on corporate sustainability, industrial by-product waste reclamation, eco-efficiency and productivity, life cycle, pollution prevention and regional eco-development strategies.

In keeping with the First International Industrial Ecology Conference held in Sorel-Tracy in 1998, the second two-day edition was the opportunity to reflect along with other experts from Canada, France and Germany on the trends, challenges, constraints and opportunities in industrial ecology that have been demonstrated on a global scale. The Industrial Ecology: Business Opportunities Conference was particularly interested in the businesses and development stakeholders that understood that innovation is the key to success. Participants found strategic avenues to face the challenge of harmoniously integrating business and environmental protection, especially as this integration pertained to industrial waste management and reclamation.
